Enhanced Security Measures

Identity Check is part of Android’s theft protection suite, which includes features like Theft Detection Lock. The new feature requires explicit biometric authentication to access sensitive resources such as performing a factory reset, changing the screen lock, registering a new fingerprint, turning off ‘Find My Device,’ adding a Google account, accessing developer options, and opening Google Password Manager.

Availability and Setup

Initially, Identity Check will be available on Google Pixel devices running Android 15 and Samsung Galaxy phones running One UI 7. Users can enable the feature by heading to Settings > Google account > All services > Theft Protection, and toggling the “Identity Check” switch.

Additional Protections

In addition to securing device settings, Identity Check also provides enhanced protection for Google Accounts and additional security for Samsung Accounts on eligible devices. This makes it much more difficult for unauthorized attackers to take over accounts signed in on the device.

Theft Detection Lock

Alongside Identity Check, Google has also rolled out Theft Detection Lock, an AI-powered theft detection system that locks the screen if it detects a potential theft attempt. This feature is now available on all phones running Android 10 and later.

Future Rollout

Google plans to make Identity Check available on other Android phones later this year. The company is also working closely with GSMA to develop new systems to tackle mobile device theft.

Conclusion

With the introduction of Identity Check, Google aims to provide robust protection for Android users, ensuring that their data remains secure even if their device falls into the wrong hands. This new feature is a significant step towards enhancing mobile security and protecting users from potential threats.
